2010 album from acclaimed singer/songwriter Ryan Bingham and his
band, The Dead Horses. Bingham recently won the Oscar and Golden
Globe for Best Original Song for ‘The Weary Kind (Theme From
Crazy Heart)’, which he co-wrote with multi-Grammy Award-winning
producer/musician T-Bone Burnett. The collaboration between
Bingham and Burnett developed into a solid artistic relationship
during the Crazy Heart recordings, and as a result, Burnett
signed on to produce Junky Star. All 12 songs on Junky Star were
written by Bingham and performed by his longtime band The Dead
Horses, featuring Matt Smith (drums), Elijah Ford (bass) and
Corby Shaub (guitar/mandolin). Burnett created a recording
environment that perfectly complimented the themes and textures
of Bingham’s reflective songwriting and gravelly voice.

Band released on June 20, 1983.

A DECADE OF HITS has yet to be topped as the best single-disc
compilation of Charlie Daniels Band hits. From their hilarious
early days exploring the longhair-redneck dichotomy–”Uneasy
Rider” and “Long Haired Country Boy” are comic story songs as good
as anything else in the genre–to the crossover pop success of
songs like the inescapable “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” and
“The South’s Gonna Do it Again,” this collection hits all the high
points. Perhaps more importantly, it collects the last couple of
truly essential Charlie Daniels Band hits, the atypically serious
veteran’s lament “Still in Saigon” and “Stroker’s Theme,” the
goofy theme to the Burt Reynolds film STROKER ACE. This may be the
only Charlie Daniels Band record you need.

The Punch Brothers are the most prodigious musicians from the
cutting edge of bluegrass and folk music. The quintet was brought
together by former Nickel Creek star Chris Thile who is a
virtuosic mandolin player. Guitarist Chris Eldridge is a member
of The Infamous Stringdusters plus occasional guest star with his
dad, Ben, and his legendary combo, The Seldom Scene. Bassist Greg
Garrison has recorded with John Scofield and Vasser Clements,
among many others, and he regularly sits in with Leftover Salmon.
Fiddle player Gabe Witcher is a first-call studio player with a
big sound and immaculate intonation and he has been featured on
the Oscar-winning soundtracks of Babel and Brokeback Mountain,

Angel with a Lariat is the second album by k.d. lang and the
Reclines, released in 1987. This was the first release outside of
Canada. Angel with a Lariat is a country recording, influenced by
rock and rockabilly and possibly even new wave[citation needed].
The album was recorded in London England in 1986, though k.d. was
based in Vancouver Canada at the time.

k.d. lang’s first major-label album (and debut American release)
was a bit of a switch from the polished retro-country of her
best-known work; with Dave Edmunds in the producer’s chair, Angel
with a Lariat often sounds more like rockabilly or roots rock than
classic C&W, with a big, snappy drum sound, plenty of guitars
mixed upfront, and lots of slapback of lang’s vocals (a production
decision lang mentioned with little enthusiasm several years after
the album came out). “Turn Me Around” and “High Time for a Detour”
rock significantly harder than most of lang’s body of work, and
“Watch Your Step Polka,” “Diet of Strange Places,” and “Tune Into
My Wave” find lang and her band (who are in fine form throughout)
indulging her sly sense of humor, which tended to get lost in the
shuffle on later albums such as Ingenue. While the production and
arrangements tend not to focus on the subtleties of lang’s voice
(with the exception of the weepy closer, “Three Cigarettes in an
Ashtray”), she’s one heck of a belter on this set, with a set of
pipes as big as all outdoors. And the cover of the old Lynn
Anderson chestnut “Rose Garden” actually tops the original. Fast,
fresh, and funny, Angel with a Lariat may not be k.d. lang’s best
album, but it’s probably the best one to put on at a party — it’s
got a good beat, and you can dance to it.
