Australia has long had its own country music tradition and while
it certainly drew from and sounds (on the surface at least) like
American country music with the same instrumentation and many of
the same themes it is its own thing the country pop approach of
Keith Urban aside. The Johnny Cash of Australian country would
have to be Roger Knox born a Gamilaroi man raised in the
Toomelah Aboriginal Mission near Boggabilla and known in
Australia and New Zealand as the Black Elvis and the Koori King
of Country. This set for Bloodshot Records which pairs Knox with
Chicago’s Pine Valley Cosmonauts finds Knox honoring the many
fine Aboriginal country songwriters of his homeland and the
irony might well be that while the country music scene in America
is just about the whitest around in Australia it just might be
the blackest. The themes and the aims are the same though and
this record is unmistakably traditional country no matter how one
chooses to define the genre with the song and the narrative it
tells always at the center of things. Among the many highlights
on this quietly stirring album are Knox’s versions of Dougie
Young’s The Land Where the Crow Flies Backwards Harry
Williams’ Blue Gums Calling Me Home (which almost sounds like
it could have been on the Byrds’ groundbreaking Sweetheart of the
Rodeo album) and Joan Fairbridge’s classic train song Ticket to
Nowhere although each of the dozen tracks here has a somber and
emotional grace. The Cosmonauts accompany Knox with a sparse
precision that lets each song remain at center stage which is
what traditional country has always been about no matter what
continent it’s coming from. Both a revelation and a fine album in
a style that seems timeless Stranger in My Land should in a
fair and equitable world bring Knox an appreciative audience in
America and it may well illustrate how much American country
music has lost and left behind in its brazen pursuit of the pop
charts

Ghost on the Canvas was designed and promoted as Glen Campbell’s farewell
album but unbeknownst to all who were not in the studio the country legend
also recorded a bunch of new vocals to old hits (plus a couple of curious deep
cuts) during those 2011 recording sessions. Producers Dave Darling and Dave
Kaplan then took these vocals added new instrumentation and released the
whole shebang as 2013s See You There. Darling and Kaplan may refer to the
Rick RubinJohnny Cash playbook but See You There isn’t an exercise in noir
nostalgia. They’ve stripped away the gossamer strings sometimes adding no
more than a guitar (Rhinestone Cowboy where the impression is Campbell
strumming along himself) but usually working in an army of guitars supported
by sensitive keyboards and steel guitars maybe the occasional Dobro or
fiddle. Compared to the classic ’60s and ’70s recordings these are spare but
they’re not stark; they’re artfully dusty. Usually the songs sound different
but feel the same which means attention is drawn directly to Campbell’s
voice which is considerably weathered showing the signs of his age. He can
still hit some impressive notes but they’re individual moments — during the
quiet stretches when he’s not reaching for the glory notes his age is quite
noticeable. To an extent there’s a bittersweetness to hearing an aged
Campbell revisit his younger self — a melancholy Darling and Kaplan are
willing to emphasize — but no matter how carefully constructed this whole
enterprise is See You There doesn’t carry the same weight as Ghost on the
Canvas. That felt like a fitting coda to a career; this feels like an
afterthought

The cover art for TimeLife’s 2013 compilation Life Unheard is
pretty clever — it’s designed to look like an old Life magazine
from the ’60s which is when much of the music on this Johnny
Cash rarities compilation was recorded — but the Unheard
suggests that this 12-track collection contains nothing but newly
unearthed tracks which is not strictly true. All but two of the
12 songs have appeared somewhere on Legacy’s ongoing Cash Bootleg
series the two exceptions being the fine story-song Ben
Dewberry’s Final Run which appears to be from the ’70s and a
pretty fun and funky travelogue that seems to date from the ’80s
The rest — which breaks down to six live tracks cut between
1969-1973; a demo called Restless Kid; and three excavations
from the vault Life’s Railway to Heaven It Takes One to Know
Me and Truth — are all easily available many on Vol. 3 of
the Bootleg series so collectors may wind up being slightly
disappointed in this disc but those who haven’t dug into the
Bootleg series will find this to be an appealing mishmash of
concert cuts and solid studio leftovers from throughout Cash’s
entire run at Columbia
